Launch SMART Notebook using either the desktop shortcut, or by right clicking the system tray icon in the bottom right corner of the screen (light blue square with a white circle inside), then selecting "Check for Updates and Activation" from the menu that pops up. There will be a message telling you it has expired.

3. Click on "Activate". (Or "Manage" if "Activate" is not available)
4. Click on the existing key if prompted (starts with "NC-2ADAY-...").

5. Click on "Manage the Selected Product Key..." ONLY if prompted.

7. "Submit request automatically (recommended)" should be selected. Click on "Next".

8. Your SMART Notebook should show activated and SMART Notebook Plus with a valid subscription.

Thompjac: Created page with "== What happened again? ==
Part of the migration to Active Directory was 1) "changing where the data was stored", and 2) "changing how user access privileges to the data..."

== What happened again? ==
Part of the migration to Active Directory was 1) "changing where the data was stored", and 2) "changing how user access privileges to the data was determined and granted". These led to the necessity of overhauling our in-house data storage and structure to allow us to finish the migration and be ready as close as possible for the 22-23 school year.

==== Why not just use the same drives letters? ====
Our existing drive letters (L:, M:, N:, and O:) pointed to live data and the District has many 9/10/11-month staff working on and off throughout the Summer and the central office which is operating year-round. Reusing these letters would break access to the live data during the Summer-long migration and was not an option. The only exception to this would be the H: drive, which is set on a per-user basis.

==== Why did the data have to get moved around a bit? ====
The existing drive letters (L:, M:, N:, and O:) were based on an older design model from back when the SEC and the schools were less connected with each other from a networking-perspective; and it was decided that a different design model would be more appropriate for the District's current user environment and network capabilities. Along with that, the drives had become cluttered, and riddled with abandoned files or folders over time.

== Where Did the Data Move? ==

In addition to your H: Drive, we now have three new drive Letters (Q:, R:, S:). Based on function, we aimed to make them easy to navigate and even "stumble" upon your data.

* H: Drive - Your Personal Home Directory. Your H: Drive. The same as always, it is your personal files. It has had a small journey as it migrated to a different server and system, but it is still the same H: Drive as years past.
* Q: Drive - Staff Home Directories. Virtually all staff will only ever see their own home directory here, which is just the long way to get to your H: drive. If you are one of the handful that have access to another's Home Directory (their H: drive), you will find it here.
** Note: This is a rare scenario; most often related to covering for unfilled office positions or long-term absences. The District does not automatically grant a user access to any other staff member's home directory and requires an explicit request from the respective supervisor or Principal; even if for the supervisor or Principal themselves (which itself may also require an elevated level of approval).
* R: Drive - Student Home Directories. Students' H: drives are found here. Sorted by building. A Teacher or Administrator should see their schools' students.
* S: Drive - Shared Files and Resources. The "Shared Drive" if you will. Any file and folders pertaining to multiple users (such as your school's "COMMON" folder) can be found here.
** Files and folders relating to a specific building or school can be found under that building's folder (e.g. "S:\AE\COMMON").
** Files and folders relating either to multiple buildings or a district-wide team or function can be found under the "DW" folder (e.g. "S:\DW\Early Childhood" or "S:\DW\Maintenance").
=== IMPORTANT NOTE ===

You will only see data you have been explicitly given access to. If you can not find any specific data that you had, or if you do not appear to have access to shared data that you use to, please submit a [http://helpdesk.usd437.net IT Helpdesk Support ticket via SchoolDude] requesting access. [[How-To Fill out an IT Support Helpdesk Ticket|Click here for How to Fill out an IT Support Helpdesk Ticket.]]

= This Page is Still being Updated =
This school year, there are a few significant changes in the equipment usage.

== Migrated from OES (Novell) Logins to Active Directory Logins ==
The District started implementing Microsoft's Active Directory (AD) last school year. It was primarily used on the backend of the computers to assist in implementing a more secure Wireless authentication as well as being used to pilot some features and functionality, but it didn't play a noticeable role in user experience. This year, Active Directory is the primary authentication method for users when using either a Windows or MacOS device. There are several reasons for implementing Active Directory on the frontend for users ranging from management and integration compatibility to licensing and support options. It will also allow us to more easily phase-in an increased security model to keep up with the State's, or our insurance's, requirements and guidelines.

Because of this change, staff and students will notice some differences compared to past years:
1. Computer sign-in process has changed. This year, every computer in the district will be configured for a user sign on. This includes not only desktops, but also laptops (including student and loaner laptops). When users sign into a device, they will have their own personal account and experience. There is no more 'shared desktop' experience if people use the same device.
::* Aside from ChromeBooks, District computers require you to be connected to the district network in order to log into the device the first time. This initial login allows the computer to set your account to the device, which will take a couple of minutes during this first time login. After your first login on that device, you can sign into the device while not connected to the district network. Subsequent logins also go much faster.
2. Mapped Network Drives have changed.
::* Part of the migration from OES to Active Directory involved changing the file servers where people save data. As part of this migration, the folder structure was re-worked to The data itself is still there but might be in a slightly different location than you might be used to. [[Data Migration Fall 2022|Click here to see additional details on where the data moved]].
::* Previous Network Drive Letters (Primarily F:, H:, L:, M:, N:, and O:)
::* New Network Drive Letters (Primarily H:, Q:, R:, and S:)
3. Able to now use Papercut to Print to any copier via "437Printers", but without needing to sign into the Papercut Client first.
::* The printing process will automatically use the credentials of the person signed into the computer when printing. If 'John Smith' is signed into a laptop and send a print job, then Papercut will automatically put the print job under "John Smith's" account. This allows us to skip last year's step of needing to make sure Papercut is running and signed in before printing; or in the case of students, be prompted every time they print.
4. For MacBook and iMac stations - No more Kanaka.
::* Kanaka was needed for the MacBooks and iMac stations to access their network shares, but had some stability issues at times. The MacOS devices are set to authenticate through AD just like the Windows devices, and should have a little smoother experience once things get going.
5. Some additional tracking capabilities if a MacBook or Windows Laptop gets misplaced.
::* With these devices requiring a login to use, they can't be used purely anonymously like they had the potential to in past years. At the very least, we will have additional information of who used the device last, similar to how we do with the ChromeBooks.
== Changes in Elementary Classroom Equipment ==

Along with the increased labelling that we are doing District-Wide, there are some changes happening at the elementary level.

* This upcoming year, K-6 ChromeBooks that students get checked out to them for the school year should now all be capable of using the styluses that are provided in the Classroom Stylus Sets that are checked out the to K-6 classrooms. Last year, 3rd and 4th grade classes did not have this functionality and did not have any Stylus sets.
** Note: The Loaner ChromeBooks (in the Loaner Cart) at the schools are still not stylus-compatible.
* Bugout Boxes of AC adapters - Last year, Pre-K and K-6 classrooms had boxes of AC adapters available in case the class has a quarantine situation or if there was a snow day that remote-schooling was needed. By Principal approval, these have all been removed and a set of Loaner Chromebook AC adapters will be managed by each Elementary School's ATA.

Thompjac:

Auburn-Washburn offers wireless access to allow for staff, students, and patrons to use as long as they are within one of the schools or at the central office. There are four wireless networks you may see.

==== 437Device ====
The 437Device network is the current wireless network used inside for the District's Windows devices. Its' use is reserved for district devices which, as of Summer of 2021, are configured to automatically connect without any user intervention. Windows Laptops and select Desktops that connect are automatically given either Staff or Student internet privileges based on if it is a Staff computer or is for Student use. If you have a district device that has issues connecting to wireless on startup, please put in a Helpdesk Ticket so it can be fixed.

==== 437Wireless ====
The 437Wireless network is the current wireless network used for the District's Chromebooks and Apple devices. Its' use is reserved for district devices which, as of Summer of 2015, are configured to automatically connect without any user intervention. Laptops and Chromebooks that connect are automatically given either Staff or Student internet privileges based on if it is a Staff computer or is for Student use. Supported devices are slowly being transitioned from 437Wireless to 437Device, including potentially the Apple devices and Chromebooks in the future. If you have a district device that has issues connecting to wireless on startup, please put in a Helpdesk Ticket so it can be fixed.

==== 437BYOD ====
The 437BYOD network is new with the recent wireless infrastructure update that the district has gone through over the last couple of years. It is meant to be used by staff and students who choose to bring in their personally-owned devices. Connecting to the 437BYOD network requires you to provide a password of '''myowndevice''' in order to connect. After connecting, a webpage will launch requiring you input your district login credentials in order to proceed. Users who are attached to this network are on a tighter restriction as far as network resources go. This network has restricted access to several district resources (e.g. printing is available, but not network file shares). Internet access is also more restricted than the 437Wireless, giving everyone "Student" access.

==== 437Guest ====
The 437Guest network is meant for parents, patrons, and other guests visiting the district to have basic internet access. This wireless network is wide open and unencrypted, anyone can connect to it without needing a password. Internet access is restricted down to Student access to ensure CIPA compliance is still met, and all district resources not required for the internet access are not available.

*Note'' - Swapping back and forth from 437Wireless to 437Guest can cause issues which may result in an inability to access network resources. Please do not log in to guest unless absolutely necessary, and if you have problems logging in to OES (Novell) or accessing any network resources afterward, please [http://helpdesk.usd437.net IT Helpdesk Support ticket via SchoolDude].

=Troubleshooting=
===I can access the internet, but cannot log in to OES (Novell) or some sites I normally visit are blocked===

This usually indicates a guest connection on the wireless network. If you've verified you are connected to the 437Wireless or 437Device network, please submit an [http://helpdesk.usd437.net IT Helpdesk Support ticket via SchoolDude].

= Final Note =
It is important to know that given the nature of wireless technology, even the most secured wireless network is not 100% secure in terms of keeping others from being able to see what you are doing. Please keep this in mind as you use any wireless network, especially in public settings, and be mindful of sending any form of private information.

== Why Do Staff Need to Sign into Their Phones Now? ==
The Phone Sign-In is a feature we've had available to us, but haven't used until this year. So why the change?

With the ability to sign into the phones, phones become 'part of the room' so no matter which staff member is in the classroom, conference room, or lab; the staff member can sign in and have their phone extension available to them. Some scenarios where this may be a benefit:
*Some staff members move rooms quite a bit and/or use shared spares. This allows the phone to match whoever is using that room.
*If there is any last minute room assignment changes, staff can simply sign out of the phone in their own room and sign into the phone in their new room without waiting for tech staff to catch up with the moves.
*During special events, conferences, ESY, or summer school; staff are able to walk into a room and sign into the phone instead of trying to be reached via a different staff member's extension.
*Going forward, this should help make the beginning of the school year start more smoothly since it is easier for us to verify that the phones match static rooms instead of the ever-changing staff assignments.
Note: '''For the majority of staff, they will only need to sign in once'''. They may need to sign in after extended breaks (Winter, Spring, or Summer) but otherwise they should be set for the year.

Note: '''If you aren't signed in, you can still dial 911.''' You can still dial both internal and outside phone numbers, but calls to your extension will go straight to voicemail instead until you sign in.

This setup will also be beneficial to the Technology Department by allowing a smoother transition into the new school year, save numerous man-hours throughout the year, and less inventory changes to maintain.
Note: If you aren't signed in, you can still dial 911. You can still dial both internal and outside phone numbers, but calls to your extension will go straight to voicemail instead until you sign in.

*Going forward, this should help make the beginning of the school year start more smoothly since it is easier for us to verify the phones match the static rooms instead of teh ever-changing staff assignments.
Note: '''For the majority of staff, they will only need to sign in once'''. They may need to sign in after extended breaks (Winter, Spring, or Summer) but otherwise you should be set for the year.

Note: If you aren't signed in, you can still dial 911. You can still dial both internal and outside phone numbers, but calls to your extension will go straight to voicemail instead until you sign in.

Also this setup will also be beneficial to the Technology Department by allowing a smoother transition into the new school year, save numerous man-hours throughout the year, and less inventory changes to maintain.
